Tenants: Deposit: Information required to be given to the tenant

Deposits: Information required to be given to the tenant

Once the deposit is received by the landlord or agent, they have 30 days to register it with a deposit scheme.

Also, within this period they must also provide the following address:

1.    The address of the rented property;

2.    The value of the deposit;

3.    How the deposit is protected;

4.    The name and contact details of the tenancy deposit protection scheme, as well as details of their respective disputes procedure;

5.    The agent or landlords name and contact details;

6.    The name and contact details of any other relevant party, i.e. if a third party has paid the deposit;

7.    An explanation (usually detailed within the assured shorthold tenancy agreement) of what may merit a deduction in the deposit;

8.    The procedure to have the deposit returned;

9.    What to do if they cannot get hold of the landlord at the end of the tenancy;

10. What to do if there is a dispute over the deposit.

If any of this information is not provided, the tenant should contact the landlord or agent immediately.
